Tolland Green Historic District

The Tolland Green Historic District is a historic district that includes the town green, Tolland Green, of the New England town of Tolland, Connecticut. The green is a long and narrow strip of land oriented in a north-south direction. The district includes the green and the surrounding properties. The historic district contains 55 contributing buildings and one other site,〔(hpdb.org )〕 and is located primarily along Merrow Road (Route 195) from just south of Cider Mill Road in the south, past the Tolland Green, then widening in the north to encompass both Tolland Stage Road (Route 74) and the street known as Tolland Green to roughly Dunn Hill Road.〔State of Connecticut, Conservation and Development Policies Plan for Connecticut (2005-2010), Locational Guide Map for Town of Tolland〕
Around the Green are several 18th- and 19th-century houses, and civic and religious buildings. Route 195 serves as the west boundary while the street known as Tolland Green serves as the east boundary. Route 74 goes through from east to west cutting the Green into two halves.〔(towngreens.com )〕
On either side of the green at the south end are two town halls, the Old Town Hall (1879) and the present Town Hall (1909). The Congregational Church, the Old Tolland County Court House (1822; separately listed on the National Register and now a library), the Board of Education building (in a converted residence built in 1830), and the Old Tolland Jail (now a museum) are located near the intersection where the Route 74 cuts through the green. The remaining buildings are residential, most dating from the 18th and 19th centuries.〔
The district is significant for its landscape qualities, for its historical associations, and for its architecture.〔 and (''Accompanying 19 photos, from 1996 (see captions pages 19-20 of text document)'' )〕
